| Weight | Heaviest per volume | Lighter than glass | Lightest |
| Drop survival | Fragile — sleeve helps a lot | Excellent — shrugs off drops | Very good |
| 2026 SLS rule | Outside the rule | Outside the rule | Needs the SLS mark (SLS 1616) since 1 Apr 2026 |
| Entry price (Sep 2026) | Rs. 349+ | Rs. 700+ typical for decent ones | Certified stock costs more than before |
| Best for | Home, fridge, office desk, taste-lovers | School bags, travel, rough use | Light backup use — with the mark |
One naming note before you shop: sellers now write “wasa bothal” on stainless steel water bottles too — the term has grown to cover the whole bottle shelf, not just glass. Insulated models usually get listed as a “wasa flask” or thermos flask instead. So when a shop search for “wasa bothal” shows you steel, that's the drift at work — if you want glass, check the material line in the listing, or search “glass water bottle”.
Our take
Which material for which person කාට කුමන ද්රව්යයද?
School kids
Steel for the bag, glass for home. Steel survives the drops and door-slamming of daily school life; the thick-wall glass bottle waits at home for water, juice and easy cleaning. If you do send glass, pick thick walls and a sleeve — see the quality check.
Home & fridge
Glass, every time. It shows how clean the inside is, carries no smells, and handled juice bottles fit the fridge door. This is where glass beats everything else.
Office desk
Glass fits the new rules too. Government offices banned single-use plastic water bottles from 31 May 2026, and a desk bottle is exactly the replacement. Nothing gets dropped on a desk.
Gifts
Boxed glass sets. The boxed “Wasa Bothal” sets local sellers offer (Rs. 2,350–2,980) have become a housewarming and teacher-gift staple — presentable, useful, and plastic-free by definition.
Fairness note
Plastic isn't the villain of this story ප්ලාස්ටික් ගැන සාධාරණ සටහනක්
We run a glass guide, so you'd expect us to cheer for glass. But for balance:
Certified plastic bottles have passed the SLS 1616 material standard — a bottle with the mark is not “unsafe”. Families switch to glass for taste, transparency and the microplastic question, not because certified plastic failed anything. And a scratched, sun-baked, years-old plastic bottle without a mark is the thing worth retiring.
If plastic is your budget reality right now, buy it with the mark, replace it when scratched, and don't leave full bottles baking in the sun. That's honest advice, and it costs nothing.
