Microplastics come up in almost every conversation about why families are switching to glass. Here's what the Sri Lankan research actually found, what the WHO actually said — and what's reasonable to do about it.

What the Sri Lanka study found පර්යේෂණයේ සොයාගැනීම්

Researchers at the University of Peradeniya analysed commercially bottled water sold in Sri Lanka and found microplastic particles in the samples — reported at roughly 2–20 particles per litre, mostly fragments and fibres. The paper is public on ResearchGate: “Microplastics in commercially bottled water in Sri Lanka”.

Read that carefully: the study documents presence. It did not set out to prove harm, and it didn't. Microplastics in bottled water have been detected in studies around the world — this one confirmed Sri Lankan bottled water is part of the same picture.

The global context

What WHO concluded ලෝක සෞඛ්‍ය සංවිධානයේ නිගමනය

In 2019 the World Health Organization conducted the first major review of microplastics in drinking water. Its conclusion, in plain words: at current levels, microplastics in drinking water don't appear to pose a health risk — but the evidence base is thin, smaller particles are understudied, and WHO called for more research and less plastic pollution overall.

So why switch at all? Because “no proven harm yet” is not the same as “nothing there”. Choosing glass is a low-cost way to reduce plastic contact from your family's daily water — reasonable, not paranoid.

Why 2026

Two things happened in the same season. The government made SLS certification mandatory for plastic drinking and feeding bottles from 1 April 2026, with officials framing it around public and child safety. And the microplastics research above was circulating widely. Families simplified both into one sentence: “switch the kids to glass.”

Stop reusing single-use bottles for weeksThe thin PET bottle from the shop is a container, not a durable bottle — heat and sunlight and repeated squeezing are exactly what you don't do to plastic you drink from.

One honest footnote for balance: a glass bottle's cap or gasket may still contain plastic parts. Steel caps minimise that — which is one more reason we keep recommending them in every quality check.

Is bottled water in Sri Lanka unsafe to drink?
The study documents that microplastics are present — it didn't conclude the water is unsafe, and WHO's position is that current levels don't appear to pose a risk. Glass is about reducing plastic contact, not about panic.
Do glass bottles release microplastics?
Glass isn't a polymer and doesn't shed microplastic particles. Caps and gaskets may include plastic — prefer steel caps where you can.
